Archives
| |
Archives are for the long-term, systematic and static safekeeping
of documents. For this purpose documents
are stored in an unalterable way (digital media are e.g. WORM data carriers). Fully automatic handling equipments, so-called
jukeboxes, are used to manage larger amounts of optical media.
TERASTORE jukeboxes are able to run up to 2 500 optical
media in a single system.

| |
Backup
| |
Data safeguarding as
storage on external media (streamer, CD-R,
WORM,, hard disk). Backups should be made
at regular intervals to prevent data loss.
| |
Barcode
| |
- Code generation by
which, according to determined patterns, graphically represented
data information is transformed in digits or letters, and vice
versa. Benefits in connection with jukeboxes:
Capture of content of a data carrier as fast as possible,
Allocation
of the media in a secure and comfortable way,
No
avoidable stress for the drives.
- In TERASTORE jukeboxes
the bar code reader is integrated into the dual
picker. This allows, particularly in large TERASTORE jukeboxes,
a fast building up of the allocation status listing by rapid scanning
of the slots.
| |
Control
Panel |
| |
The control panel of
TERASTORE jukeboxes consists of three components:
| |
| |
| |

| |
Cabinet
| |
TERASTORE jukeboxes
are constructed to be easily be expanded or cascaded
by external lining up.
| |
Cache
| |
A special intermediate
data storage buffer with very short access time for frequently
used data. During the jukebox operation the cache is located either
on the serveror on the Raid-system.
| |
Caddy
| |
- A case for CD-ROM
/ CD-R media that usually can be opened
and utilized for operation of jukeboxes. Caddies and cartridges
provide a optimum surface protection for the sensitive data
carriers and armours them against the high charge during the
robotic operations.
| |
Cartridge
| |
- A case for DVD-RAM,
5¼'' and 12'' media that usually can be opened and utilized
for jukebox operations. Caddies and cartridges
provide an optimum surface protection for the sensitive data
carriers and armours them against the high charge during the
robotic operations.
| |
Cascading
| |
The external expandability
(" cabinet to cabinet ") lets TERASTORE
jukeboxes of the 7x series (7x00, DCR7x, MIX7x) increase to a
capacity of approx. 2,500 media in a single system. TERASTORE
Jukeboxes of the series 100-2000 for 12 " media are also constructed
according to the principles of cascadability.

Fibre
Channel |
| |
Fibre Channel (FC)
is a special physical transfer mechanism. FCs are in use for e.g.
networks (IP log) and mass storage systems (SCSI).
This type of serial bus is designed for photoconductor and copper
transmission cables. One of the major advantages of FC is its
versatile configuration, from 2 devices up to networks with over
16 million users. Data transmission rates by 12.5 MB/s up to approximately
100 MB/s are intended for the FC technology. FC can bypass distances
up to 10 kilometres. Further features are its flexibility (FC
supports different topologies), the simplicity of the installation
and the easy integration. This type of serial data communication
makes it possible to receive all signals, dispatched trough the
bus, in the given order and without any delay.

| |
MO
| |
Magneto Optical Disk,
WORM or ROD - max. capacity currently 9.1GByte. The capacity depends
upon the segmenting byte/sector (e.g. 4096b/s = 9,1/8,6 GByte).
Via the direction of the single data points' (pixels) magnetic
field and the angle of refraction deviating thereby, the laser
receives by scanning the 0 / 1 information. MO media are almost
insensitive for outside magnetic fields. The overwriting ability
extends up to approximately 1.000.000 cycles (factor 10 larger
than DVD). In comparison to the DVD technique
the recording rate achieves data transfers four times as fast.
| |
Modulte
Technique |
| |
TERASTORE jukeboxes
are internally structured according to an unit construction system.
Mailbox-, slot-
und drive modules enable a non-standard
composition of the mass storage system. This makes it possible
for DSM to offer special UPGRADE models.
The exchange of individual modules (e.g. an additional drive module
for a slot module) is realizable at the face. This qualifies the
TERASTORE jukebox technique as an extremely flexible system.

documents with scanners.

Optical
Disk |
| |
Optical data carrier,
recording disk, scanned or recorded optically using laser beams.
Optical data carrier are 5 ¼" MO and WORM,
12 " WORM, CD and DVD. Optical
recording disks offer in particular the advantages of contactfree
sampling and straight data access; they are fast and on a long-term
basis stable.

| |
Phase
Change |
| |
The phase change technology
is a method exclusively optical. The recording layer can take
up structures amorphously (unstructured) and in a crystalline
way (arranged). The hitting laser light is thereby reflected differently.
True WORM media (physically not changeable,
irreversibly) can also be created by means of the phase change
technology. The max. storage capacity is 1,5 GByte per medium.

| |
SCSI
| |
Abbrev. for
Small Computer Systems Interface; originally
parallel 8 bit I/O bus, later furthermore serially defined for
the link of peripheral devices of all kinds. The original type
called SCSI-1 is no longer in use. It was replaced by the so-called
SCSI-2-Interface. The SCSI 2-Norm includes additional instructions
(e.g. for controlling the jukeboxes) and enables a faster transfer
rate (10 Mbyte/s with a 8 bit bus - also called Fast SCSI, 20
MByte/s with a 16 bit bus - called Fast Wide SCSI). A further
duplication of the clock rate lead to Ultra SCSI. Along with it
came a duplication of the data transfer rate with simultaneous
halving of the max. bus cable length to 1.5 m Single Ended or
12.5 m Differential Ended (HVD - High Voltage Differential). An
active termination is prerequisite. By means of Ultra2 SCSI the
transfer rate can once again be doubled (80Mbytes/s with a 16
bit wide bus). Because a further halving of the bus cable is not
practicable, this standard is only defined as LVD (Low Voltage
Differential). LVD is a differential cabling operating with a
third of signal voltage. The max. cable length amounts to 12 meters.

UPGRADE
| |
TERASTORE jukeboxes
are on request available as part-equipped upgrade models. These
models have free space left, which can successively be filled up
to the maximum configuration (later installation of slot
modules or additional drives right by
the enduser). The TERASTORE7x model series makes an external enlargement
(cascading) by attaching further cabinets
possible. So the system can be extended up to approx. slots 2,500
.

and True WORM (invariable information, storage medium appropriate
for revision-safe long-term archiving). DSM offers both 5¼ "and
